Club News

CONGRATULATIONS to all our Stoke players who have been playing so well in the Nelson Centre Championships.
In most of the competitions there have been several Stoke teams qualify for post section play, and we have had some winners.
In the latest competition, the Mixed Pairs, the semifinals saw 2 very tight games against United club teams with both Stoke teams coming through as winners right at the end.
So the final will be played at a later date between Paul Baken and Helen Moseley, and Allan Griffiths and Marie Watson.

Club Greens at Stoke Bowling Club

Carter Green

Wadsworth Green

The club has two Greens each 36.6 square, both are planted with Cotula Maniototo. A level surface is important and the surface is planed every 8 to 10 years.

The Maniototo weed likes to be watered often and in dry conditions the Greens need to be flooded or a good long heavy watering is required. A Fungus "Brown Patch" can be a problem from November to January and is controlled with a good spray program.

The Bowling season is from the end of September to the end of April, 30 weeks of Bowling, seven days a week starting at 9.30am or tournaments 9.00am. The Greenkeeper tries to keep the playing speed at 15 to 17 seconds but the Greens can get a little quicker during the hot dry summer.

The cutting of the Greens is continual during the season and need to be cut at least 3 times a week but on occasions they need cutting every day depending on growth. Greens are cut and rolled prior to commencement of competition play. Rinks are marked to show the centre line for Jack placement.
