BOWL ALONG NEWS FROM STOKE. |

Saturday October 10th 2009
Welcome to 2009- 2010 Bowls Season!!!
This is the first official newsletter of the season so lots of information to follow. It is good to see the start of the bowls season, although the inclement spring weather has put a bit of dampener on things, I am sure that once the sun kicks in we will all be well on our way to enjoying play once more.
A big thank you to Don Carter and his helpers for how good the new surface on the Wadsworth green is looking, I am sure that we are all eager to commence play on it.
The fundraising dinner was a huge success and all those who were able to attend will tell you that the company was great, the meal superb and the Kerry Clark very interesting. I intend to run another slide show, probably on the night of the Invitation Singles BBQ and will have some photos up of the event, alongside some of the old ones that you may have missed the first time around.
Also well supported was the Garage Sale, thank you to those who helped with that fundraiser.
Speaking of fundraisers we have been asked to help with a stock take, which will raise significant funds for the club, some volunteers are needed for this so please read the notices below for details. Confirmation of your ability to help is needed by October 15th.
Don't forget to check out the Qualifying event for the Stoke Invitation Singles, rounds are scheduled to be played on Friday evenings, approximate 5.30pm start. This is a good time to come and check out the notice boards and other happenings at the club. Please read the following notices followed by acknowledgements.
If you know anyone who is a member of the club and is not yet receiving these emails and would like to please forward this on to them and they can email me (marita.bol@hotmail.com) to add themselves to the list. At present I email over 70 members of the club and would love to keep contact with as many as possible. I also post the latest newsletter up on our website, so it can be veiwed there too. www.stokebowling.nelson.org.nz.

Good luck to Shannon and our new member Richard Collett for the Speight's North East Valley 10 000 on the weekend of the 23rd to 26th of October.
Other notable results this season are:
Haddock Trophy - Ken Watson(s) Alan Hubbard & Graham Bishop.
France Cup - Dianne Merritt(s), Kath Newth & Elena Scott
Appleby Trophy - Russ Calder(s) Lynden Penketh & Joan Linton
Why Should I Have Coaching - Huh?
I agree - there has been a negative response to coaching in the sport of bowls, and sadly - it has been rightfully so!
Notice I use past tense - it WAS that way - where the coach always pointed out what was wrong with you, then attempted (usually by treating you as a child) to sort you out.
So why should you . . .
By the end of an average session you may have been feeling like, what's this all about anyway? Do I actually get a say in the way I deliver/play? Or maybe feeling embarrassed at how you have been treated and spoken to.
Am I ringing any bells here . . . ???
- Well it HAS been about the coach and the coach knowing and throwing - i.e. assuming to know what is wrong with your delivery, and throwing things at you like criticism, without any answers that validate you as a bowler.
B-U-T
Here Comes The GOOD News!
The whole philosophy of coaching has changed, coaches are now there to support YOU, the PLAYER in achieving your goals, whether it be just wanting to deliver well enough to enjoy a casual or social roll-up in comfort and without pain, or to become a top club, centre, regional, or national bowler. It's ALL ABOUT THE PLAYER!
You will now be coached in a style that raises awareness, creates PLAYER OWNERSHIP, and raises self-belief, impacting your potential - the main way this is facilitated is by valuing your already gained experience and asking questions of relevance to you, while respecting you as a person, - you know what's best for your own body.
We as coaches do not have you in our sights, with the barrel of criticism aimed directly at your delivery; if you are comfortable with your delivery, and there are no performance related issues (i.e. does it affect my outcomes or stop me from being as good as I know I can be?) - Then - IT AINT BROKE! And any coach worth his/her weight in salt will leave it alone.
But, on the other hand, if you have an issue with your delivery that is affecting your performance, then let's have a look-see, and through questioning, maybe we can help YOU develop a more comfortable style that will cause you less pain and/or discomfort, increase your ability, and improve both your game, and your enjoyment of it.
All Bowls NZ accredited coaches that are validated as of July 2009 will have been trained in and be coaching in this new manner, and early feedback from players that have been in the game for many years, has been extremely positive.
So to all players that have had a negative experience in the past regarding coaching, - sorry.
But let me encourage you to take a fresh look at it this season!

Hi All
It is time for another newsletter from me, although there has been no bowls winter time at the Stoke Bowling club has not been quiet.
I am happy to report that the Bus Trip on the 25th of June was a huge success and enjoyed by all. It was great to see such a wide age group, 18 being the youngest and almost 70 as the oldest, with many in between as well. What a nice introduction to the club for some of our new members. Which brings me to this Friday night (10th of July) I will be showing a slide show of photos taken during the bus trip and a few other occasions, including bowls so come along and have a quiet drink and a laugh. It is hoped that the bus trip can become an annual event.
I can also report that the ladies luncheon at the suburban club was a success with 20 ladies attending and am sure this too will become a regular occurrence once more.
Southland Building Society has a special investment offer for club members:

ENJOY THE '0FF- SEASON'!
24th March. 09.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR 2 NZ PLAYERS who performed so well

Shannon McIlroy , who moved to Stoke this season had the magic touch and won his singles games and 2 of his pairs games, and
Amy Brenton was in the Under 18 NZ team.
Recently they played together and won the centre pairs, and then won the regional play off at Westport. Next month they play in the NZ final. Good Luck!
And best wishes to Shannon as he goes to Australia this week to play in the Under 25 Singles!
Last weekend saw Marie Watson (United) win the women's CH of Ch singles, and
son Gary Watson (Stoke) win the men's Ch of Champ singles.
What a great result!
On Sunday a full green of mixed fours played for the Bailey trophy, sponsored by Shone and Shirley. Only 2 teams won 4 games and the runner up skip was Pat Bailey , son of Denny Bailey who presented the trophy way back in the 70's, when mixed play was almost unknown!!
The winners were Shannon and Brodie (Stoke), and Christine and Dayle from United.
St Paddy's Party
Saturday the 14th March was a great night for those that attended the St Paddy's Party. With Irish music playing all night, and Janis dancing the the odd jig, Stoke Bowling Club members celebrated with a green theme.

Raffles were won, and the people voted for the best dressed male and female. Terry Wiechern misunderstood the criteria, choosing not to take into account that it was about 'GREEN' and voted for himself, earning a sparkly 'green' bowtie as a prize. With voting being almost unanimous, Gary and Janis took out these prizes.
With the lovely Autumn weather we're having be sure to enter the games that are coming up. Too soon it will be the end of the season!!
HAPPY BOWLING
1st March. 09.
OUR YOUNGER BOWLERS.
Recently 3 of our student members went to the regional playoffs in ChCh to qualify for the Kittyhawk finals in Auckland. All 3, Julia Paul and Josh made the finals and will join Amy there for what is the NZ under 20 singles.
We also had the Inter Secondary School competition at Stoke this week, and 8 players from Nayland college will go forward to Blenheim for the regional playoffs, before the NZ finals in December. (The four others going come from Nelson College.)
Have a look at the photo gallery page to see some of the young ones.
The coaches and helpers who work with the Nayland and Garin students
who practice at Stoke deserve a very big THANK YOU.
It is certainly exciting to see the talent and enthusiasm of these young players.
Shannon McIlroy and Amy Brenton go to Australia soon to play for NZ teams. GOOD LUCK!(Also to Misty Arnold who is now at United.)
Greenkeeper Don has just changed starting times at Bowls to 9.30am as the mornings are too dark for green preparation. So with only a couple of months to go this season, make the most of it and get lots of HAPPY BOWLING!

JANE SCOTT.
Today we are very sorry to hear that Jane Scott passed away.
She was our Club Patron and a Life Member of the club.
She contributed so much to this club over the years as Ladies' President, Catering Convener, and Umpire.
She was the winter card's afternoon organiser in the 1980's. She was also one of the group who helped raise funds when the new clubhouse was built. They spent hours having street cake stalls , selling raffles, and doing catering and cleaning in the club to make money.
She was a successful bowler as well, and usually took new bowlers under her wing.
During the last few years when bowling was not possible , she kept involved with the club by assisting with the card afternoons when they started up again, and kept her interest in what was happening in the club.
Goodbye Jane.
UPDATE.Jan 14th.
Gary Watson's team Lost the semi-final to the eventual winners in Peter Belliss'team.
But Gary DID jointly win the Leonard Trophy for the overall men's performance and consistency.
Kaye Tomlinson team, including Colleen Kempton won the women's fours.
CONGRATULATIONS!
JAN.13TH 2009
Great results from the Nationals in Auckland

Have you been following the results of the Nationals in Auckland?
Haven't our Stoke players done well!!
CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU ALL.
Today Gary Watson has reached the quarter-final of the fours---here's hoping Gary!!
(and Kaye Tomlinson of Richmond is in the semi-final of the ladies fours.)
In the Women's Singles Amy Brenton got to the last 16, a wonderful effort. She had some great write-ups regarding her ability.
Similarly, Gary Watson qualified to the last 16, then the last 8 !!
He was defeated by Ray Bester an experienced international player.
James Pugh went out just before the last 16 in the singles and he and Gary made headlines by their great play against Gary Lawson and partner, in the pairs..
Amy and her partner Gemma Collett (Paul Watts sister, who started by playing college bowls at Stoke) made the post section play in the pairs before being defeated..
( Richard Collett who won the men's singles is Gemma's husband and Marie Watts son-in law.)
Shannon McIlroy did well in the pairs, singles and fours , but dipped out in tough games, and
Brody Dix is also competing and played in the pairs and fours with his old team mates from Auckland, qualifying in the pairs.
Misty Arnold who this season moved to United was also successful in qualifying for the post section singles, and pairs with her partner Jo Collis(Who won both the senior and junior Nelson Ch of Champs last season.)
Coming up in March will be a Trans Tasman match between NZ and OZ in Australia.
Very special congratulations to Shannon, selected as singles player for the NZ team, and Amy who is in the under 18 team. Misty was selected for the under 25 team.
A great reward for all the work they put into the game.
And a camera was needed at a recent tournament at Nelson! Paul Watts played 3 lead bowls and each one touched the kitty and came to rest side by side behind it. Great bowling Paul!!
Pity the next opposition bowls was a drive!!
HAPPY BOWLING.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
With 3 months of the season behind us you can see from the champ/results that good progress has been made with championship play, with the new format of interclub on Saturday mornings, and club play in the afternoons, giving more time for the champs.
Greenkeeper Don opened the Carter green for play on Dec.1st with an excellent surface thanks to his hard work.
Danny Rice has taken up the job of club captain and is happy to liaise between members and executive if there are any issues you want discussed.
Two Stoke teams have reached the final of the Nelson Centre pairs, and this game will be played mid-Jan. Try and get along to support these players. Paul Baken and Helen Moseley v Shannon McIlroy and Amy Brenton.
HAPPY BOWLING IN 2009!!
Dec 24th 08.
HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!
it is usually a fairly quiet time at the club over the holiday period, so watch the whiteboards to see if any social games are arranged for you.
Good luck if you are off to the bowls in Auckland, and enjoy your holiday whether at home or away.
Dec.4th 08.

Nov.26th 08.
This coming weekend is the start of the Sevens competition.
Stoke has a team in each division and has keen competitive players selected, so players and spectators should enjoy the games. It should be much more interesting for the women this year as rather than just Stoke and United in the first division with only one round to play, this year 5 clubs are in which will create more competition.
We still have only one green in use, but the Carter green is looking good and Don has spent a lot of time weeding and grooming it ,so depending on the weather we could be using it soon.
As you'll see in the Champ results both senior singles champs have been completed with Gary Watson winning the men's with 2 lives, and Carol Stevens the women's after playing Rhonda Middleton 3 times on the final day. Congratulations.
It was exciting to have 2 Stoke players make the final of the Stoke Invitation Singles.
Shannon McIlroy defeating Gary Watson. Full results are on this website.
We have had some quiet weekends at the club lately with centre fixtures involving a lot of our players in competition, and as Nelson reps. Recently Lloyd Bellis and Brodie Dix won the Junior Centre pairs. well done!
Lots more bowls to play so
HAPPY BOWLING!!
08/09 SEASON IS UNDERWAY! HOO-RAY
October 2008.
Already it is 4 weeks since our Opening day!
I heard a comment "I didn't know half the people in the clubhouse!" And yes, we do have a lot of new members and some who've returned after a break. Aren't we lucky!
WELCOME to you all. I'm sure we'll gradually get to know everyone.
The Interclub competitions are under way and 2 days of club championships have been held.
Last Saturday saw the first format of Interclub in the mornings and club champs in the afternoon. With only the Wadsworth green available at present, the men played 2 rounds of their champ triples on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday the ladies played the senior singles.
With 4 rounds completed, this competition is now well under way.
Several trophies have been played for in earlier weeks which has given members a chance to get "bowls fit" prior to the champs, and we have had Have a go and practice sessions.
Friday evenings have provided some great bowls to watch.
Because we have several talented new members in the club, plus other keen members, a qualifying competition is being held for places in the Invitation singles which will be held early November.
Seventeen members are vying for the 4 places available, and some top class matches have been played.
You can look forward to watching them play matches against some top NZ bowlers 7-9th November in the Invitation Singles
The Carter green is coming along well. Some nice warm weather would give it a boost.
Hope you have noticed how spic and span everything is thanks to those volunteers in the off season. Well done.
Thanks too to John who maintains the clubhouse, and Don who does the green and surrounds. They keep them looking immaculate.
Important to the club are VOLUNTEERS!!
Keep you eye open for what you can do around the club--- and
HAPPY BOWLING
19th May 08.
A lovely sunny morning on Sunday led to an excellent turn out for the club AGM.
It went very smoothly, with all positions filled during the election of officers, and very little general business to discuss.
Gavin Sparks has come in as our new president and Allan Griffiths is vice-president. Colin Aitken and Marilyn Robertson join David Merritt as selectors, and Graham Bishop is now the Director of works and maintenance
Beryl Calder, Kevin Hoult, and Peter Rutherford were thanked for their contribution over past years.
The demise of the social committee was discussed, as we have no social functions planned for the winter, and hopefully some volunteers will step up for this. We need you!
It was a great pleasure to see Janis Reynolds elected a life member of the club.
She has been the club's secretary almost since she first joined Stoke, as well as serving as club president, catering convenor, special events convenor, and attending most centre meetings and generally keeping an eye on everything going on in the club. We are lucky to have her.
Some very tired men finished a huge job earlier this month when they removed the turf on the Carter green. It was taken off like ready lawn and many blisters appeared with the shovel and barrow work!
You did a great job fellas! Thank you.
We have been fortunate to have Ferrers McCarthyand Colin Aitken on the board of the Nelson Centre for some years, as they have contributed such a lot of ideas, and time and effort to this. We hope you enjoy your retirement from this!
Tuesday afternoon euchre continues to be very popular with 45-50 players at the first sessions.
Do join in. Just $2 for the game and cuppa, plus there are raffles and a sales table.
SEE YOU NEXT SEASON
April 6th.
Just 3 weeks to go to the end of the season!
Have you noticed how good everything still looks around the club??
Don has trimmed the shrubs again and they look wonderful, and so do the greens.
And the clubhouse always looks so bright and welcoming thanks to John's care
Thanks Don and John.
We still have a major event to look forward to with the Invitation Pairs on the 18-20th April. And hopefully everyone getting involved in the State of Origin bowls when YOU can play for your region. Last year the overseas team won so get ready to support your area.
Most of our regular bowls play has just finished.
On Tuesday the Casual Bowls group had their last session, and were put through their paces by Lynden and Kath. It's a very happy social group where new folk learn to play, and they appreciate the time Lynden and his helpers have put into it.
The Saturday jackpot bowls also finished last week . Interruptions by rain, and other fixtures curtailed this a bit this season, and surprisingly the jackpot was not won. So on the final day it took about a dozen spins to come up with the lucky score! Thanks to Jim who organised it each week.
Friday mufti triples finish this week ,and again Lynden and his helpers have organised this well, with games possible most Fridays.
Coaching sessions were held on Monday mornings to learn shot play and other skills, and coaches took the new players in hand on Tuesdays too.
Have a look at the champs results page and you will see that our players have had good results this season .
CONGRATULATIONS to our successful members, especially the gold star winners Diane, Nigel, Paul and Gary.
A group of secondary school students practised at Stoke and took part in the Inter-school competition. Amy, Julia and Kelly will play in the NZ final in Dec.
After Christmas, Janis organised a 6 week league, playing 2 one hour games in the evening with either all non-members , or one member with 2 new chums in each team.
This brought quite a few new players to the club.
A new trophy was played for last weekend for parent or grandparent and child.
It was good to see the number involved from a 10year old with his grandmother, to some quite large sons !
We are lucky to have willing people to organise bowls play to suit everyone.
Our selectors, match committee, tournament directors, and other organisers do a great job. It sure makes for HAPPY BOWLING.
NOTE: EUCHRE AFTERNOONS COMMENCE MAY 6TH. 1.30PM. ALL WELCOME.

HAPPY NEW YEAR
Hope 2008 is a Happy, Healthy Year for You, with plenty of happy bowling too.
The first part of the season has whizzed by. The lack of rain meant lots of extra watering and care of the greens by Don, but also, no delays in getting matches played. Most of the club champs are completed or well under way.
Several of our members are heading off to CHCH to play in the nationals and we wish them well.
Our 2 young NZ reps , Misty and Amy , are going to play in the womens singles and pairs.
After the holidays the Summer evening social bowls will get under way from 15th Jan.
Do talk to any mates/neighbours etc and get them interested. Further info for this is on the Have a go page.
Saturday jackpot bowls will also be starting up later in the month for members.
And on Jan 6th a game of triples is on - - put your name on whiteboard please.

This morning we had 4 more new folk come along to Tuesday's Casual Bowls and the coaches soon had them going well. Do tell your friends to get along too...then they'll find out why you're never home!!
It is a friendly group and an ideal way to socialise as you get more confident at playing the game.
Let's hope we have some nice calm days ahead........Happy Bowling!

The Stoke club's greens and surrounds are looking magnificent.
Our thanks to Gavin and Graham and their volunteers who have got everything painted, repaired, scrubbed or renewed during the winter. It looks great.
The new numbers, and rubbish containers a big improvement.
Our shrubs have been trimmed beautifully and I suspect greenkeeper Don did that, as well as having immaculate greens ready for the new season.
A big thank you to the organising committee of the Euchre . The players will miss their cheerful games on Tuesdays.
Hope you have been to the clubhouse and checked the boards and noticeboards so that you do not miss out on anything!
If you are wanting to play in interclub games get your names up promptly for the selectors to see.
The sheets are up for entries for club championships and centre events. If you are not yet in a team you must put your name at the bottom of the sheet so players know you are available.
There is a list for men to show their interest in playing in the Invitation Singles. What an opportunity to take!
The PROMOTION weekend Oct 5-9th is an important one for ALL our members and a time to encourage others to HAVE-A-Go.

END OF SEASON NEWSLETTER
Sure hope none of you got flooded or washed out by that downpour we had in Stoke yesterday!! WOW it rained!!
Well the 06/07 season was completed with the AGM being held last weekend. A good turnout for it, and nice to have all the positions filled.
As usual it was a busy season, especially for those playing competitive bowls, and it was great to have a good number of our members successful in several centre events, and at NZ finals. Congratulations to all our winners.
We also hope that everyone enjoyed the games that were organised for club play and thanks go to the volunteers who organised these.
We know that lots of Stoke players will be keeping their game going , by playing on the artificial greens at Tahuna and Maitai over the sunny winter days.
The Social committee have arranged for some social occasions at the club. A quiz night on May 26th and a Race night at end of June, and other events too. Pop into the club to see what notices are up. The club and bar is open Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the winter.
Tuesday Euchre afternoons are very friendly and popular, so don't be shy about joining in .
Greenkeeper Don has got the greens looking great and if the weather is right he thinks we may be ready to start again before the end of Sept!
Enjoy your winter break....and
LOOK FORWARD TO SEASON 07/08!!
